Back to School FREE School Supplies Program

Summer is nearly over and students are trading in their beach towels for back packs as they gear up for a new school year. While most children anticipate heading back to school, some parents worry about juggling the cost of school supplies with the family budget. With this in mind, HTC, in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Conway and media partner, Waccamaw Publishers, is once again distributing FREE school supplies for the 12th Annual Back to School FREE School Supplies Event.

On Wednesday, August 17, HTC and Kiwanis Club of Conway members will distribute FREE school supplies beginning at 8:00 a.m. at each HTC branch office and at 10:00 a.m. at the HTC store located inside the Food Court at Coastal Grand Mall.

Each HTC office will have bags packaged with pencils, rulers, erasers, pencil bags, notebooks and more. Supplies are limited and will be issued on a first come, first serve basis. HTC has nine convenient locations throughout Horry County: Carolina Forest, Coastal Grand Mall, Conway, Loris, Little River, Murrells Inlet, Myrtle Beach and Towne Centre. Please note that bags will not be distributed at the Socastee location this year due to construction.

For nearly 60 years, HTC has been giving back to the community through various projects within the public and private school systems.

Directory and Cell Phone Recycling Program

HTC has taken a leadership role in the recycling effort, which has become increasingly important as landfill space fills up and as our environment becomes more threatened by pollution. In 1991, HTC began a recycling program for old telephone directories and has continued the campaign every year since.

This year, the RECYCLING 2011 campaign will run from March 14 through May 2. The goal is for each partnering school in Horry and Georgetown Counties to collect at least 2,011 directories.

For each directory that is delivered to any HTC branch office location, technology prizes will be awarded based on two criteria: 1) the schools that recycle the most directories and 2) the schools that recycle the most directories based on the number of students in the school. First place ($2,500), second place ($1,000) and third place ($500) prizes will be awarded in each category. Technology prizes will include desktop computers, laptops, smartboards, mobis and more.

Phone Book Recycling Program

For each cell phone recycled, HTC will donate a minimum of $1.00 per phone all the way up to $39 per phone to the Horry County Schools' Fund for Homeless Students, depending on the model phone recycled. Plus, each person donating a directory or cell phone will receive a coupon good for a FREE 12 OZ. FROSTY from Wendy's®, a Buy a Stix and get a FREE original or cinnamon sugar pretzel from Auntie Anne's, and a Buy One, Get One coupon for mini-golf and Par 3 facilities from Burroughs & Chapin!

In addition, the top three schools that recycle the most phone books will receive prizes for the top participating class including: Wendy's FREE Kid's Meal coupons for the students and teachers in the top class of those schools!

Old directories and cell phones may be dropped off at any HTC branch office location. The Horry County Solid Waste Authority has provided a large recycling bin at the Conway HTC Business office to handle deliveries of 25 or more. HTC branch office locations will not be able to handle drops in excess of 25 directories. Please see the receptionist for the FREE Frosty and Buy One, Get One coupons from Auntie Anne's and Burroughs & Chapin and to give credit to the preferred school.

When telephone books are recycled, they are used for such things as the manufacturing of ceiling tiles, textbooks, insulation, and envelopes for telephone bills. When cell phones are recycled, they are refurbished and redeployed in areas of the world where there are no land (wire) lines, or, where the cost of a new phone is prohibitive. Phones that cannot be refurbished or donated will be recycled and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

For more information about the RECYCLING 2011 program, please contact Nicole Hyman, HTC Senior Marketing Coordinator, at 369-8498.

Recycling Program 2010 Results:

The HTC RECYCLING 2010 campaign was an enormous success this year with 72 public and private schools in Horry and GeorgetownCounties recycling over 95,800 directories instead of consuming valuable space in the local landfill.

In exchange for old cell phones, HTC contributed $1,098.72 to the Horry County Schools' fund for Homeless Students. For each old cell phone that was delivered to any HTC branch office location, HTC donated $1.00 to the fund.

HTC has prepared numerous presentations to entertain and educate students in the classroom such as 911 Safety, Careers in Telecommunications, Fiber Optics, Recycling Phone Books, and the Telecommunications Industry. HTC has also created a library for teachers of books and videos on the telecommunications industry as a great additive to your lesson. Click here for educational resources and more information.

In addition to classroom presentations, we encourage classes to tour the HTC campus to experience hands-on learning of the requirements to provide phone, cable, Internet, and more to their classroom and home. To schedule a tour, contact Nicole Hyman at (843) 369-8498

They also see famous landmarks such as the Washington Monument, Smithsonian Institution, Jefferson and Lincoln memorials, U.S. Capital, Arlington National Cemetery, Washington Cathedral and Supreme Court. HTC@School Newsletter

HTC sends out a bi-monthly newsletter called HTC@school to all teachers, principals and guidance counselors. The educational update from HTC informs and reminds educators of what HTC has to offer the classroom in forms of presentations, tours and as an educational resource. The newsletter is a communication tool that HTC developed in 1999 to help notify teachers as to what HTC has to offer the classroom. By reading the newsletter, teachers and principals have a special link to a qualified educational representative. The educational newsletter was also created to increase the amount of tours and classroom presentations as well as promote HTC's continued commitment to educational achievements and programs.

Community Service

We also send employee volunteers into the local public and private schools to ensure that young children are exposed to the modern tools of telecommunications, and that children understand the importance of a good education. In addition, our volunteers teach young children how to use the 9-1-1 emergency response number. Over the last several years, HTC has been a sponsor of the Fire and Life Safety Expo held in Myrtle Beach. Thousands of students representing schools in Horry and Georgetown Counties attend this event and learn about Safety Tips for Kids that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

McGruff Truck Program

In October of 2003, just in time for family safety month, HTC got on board with the McGruff Truck program along with the other utility companies to help people when they have emergencies. Most young people have heard of the McGruff Dog who says, "Take a bite out of crime." The message of the McGruff Truck program so appropriate for a telephone company is, "We'll Call for Help." McGruff Truck stickers are located on all HTC vehicles and if someone has an emergency and motions to the driver, the HTC employee will call for help. HTC hosts McGruff assembly programs to educate and inform students of the procedures to follow if they have an emergency.
